Huawei Ideos coming to T-Mobile as the Comet
Remember the Huawei Ideos? It is a small, inexpensive Android device that was rumored to hit T-Mobile several weeks ago. Well, Tmonews got confirmation today that the Ideos is, indeed, coming to T-Mobile USA and will be called the T-Mobile Comet.
If you recall, the Ideos (or Comet), has a small, 2.8" screen, 3MP autofocus camera, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and runs stock Android 2.2, Froyo. The fact that it runs stock Froyo puts it into a more respectable category for many potential buyers.
According to the information, it will launch on November 3rd, just in time for the holiday shopping season. No price was mentioned, but most rumors suggest it will cost between $50 and $100 on contract. It's also unknown if T-Mobile will offer it in multiple colors like the original Ideos pictured above, but it is expected that they will.
This little thing will likely be faster and more capable than it appears. Running stock Froyo means that it will be fast, even on a slower processor, and the price is perfect for first-time smartphone buyers. I think 2.8" is a tad too small for the screen, but I still think this looks like a nice little phone and, if cheap enough, I'll probably recommend it to people looking to get their first smartphone.
I agree that 2.8" is really small, but I honestly see this appealing more to girls anyway, who might be more willing to sacrifice screen size for compactness. These would be great at $50, and I can see a lot of these being received as Christmas presents. I know that a lot of "smartphone people" would probably scoff at these, but I can definitely appreciate that people are looking for different things in phones and these will appeal to an entirely different subset of smartphone users. I'm all for a spectrum of choices in the smartphone world.
