The weekend is here, and it's time for another Weekend Rumor Recap. This is where we quickly recap all of the best Android-related rumors from the past week. If you're the kind of person who would rather read all the rumors immediately as they come in, we recommend any of the Android sites listed on the side of this site. Now, let's take a look at the latest rumors:
First up, Android Central scored an exclusive first-look at the upcoming HTC Merge/Lexikon, which is headed to Verizon. This is a QWERTY-slider device with specs nearly identical to the T-Mobile G2. It will be a world-phone and will, of course, feature lots of Bing.
Ryan says: The G2 has really great specs, so a similar device with a keyboard on Verizon is great news. Bing is not great news. Here's hoping Verizon will at least give users a choice this time.
Shelsy says: Can I just say how glad I am that T-mobile got the G2 and not Verizon?
Earlier this year, a roadmap of upcoming T-Mobile phones was leaked, and one of the items listed was the Motorola Begonia. Now, Engadget has it on good authority that this device will be the Cliq 2, will feature WiFi calling and mobile hotspot, and will launch November 1.
Ryan says: I have no interest in this device, because it runs Motorola's ugly skin. And given the really horrible support that existing Cliq users have received from Motorola (still running 1.5, no update until next year!), I can almost guarantee that no current Cliq owners will buy it.
Shelsy says: I love code names--Begonia. Nice. And yeah, not a fan of Motorola phones that never get updates.
Lots of information regarding a previously-unknown Samsung phone, codenamed the Continuum, was leaked this week. First up, Engadget got some exclusive details about the phone, which features a unique dual-screen design. The lower, smaller screen will display alerts, messages etc., and will even turn on when the phone is picked up. Secondly, BGR got some high-res pictures of the device, which is headed for Verizon. The Continuum is a Galaxy S device, meaning it will be very fast, and very powerful.
Ryan says: This is such a unique design. I love the idea of the smaller display turning on when the phone is picked up, and being able to quickly glance at messages, weather, etc. If it were by anyone but Samsung, and any carrier but Verizon, I'd be extremely interested in it.
Shelsy says: I really like the design of this phone and like when manufacturers branch out in their design. I could see this design becoming very popular. Unfortunately, it's going to Verizon, so....blech.
The upcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab is going to hit all major US carriers sooner or later, but The Droid Guy got exclusive pictures of the AT&T version in the wild. Nothing new about the device was revealed, but pictures are always nice, right?
Ryan says: Yep, it looks like the Tab. I'm still not convinced I need one, and if I do buy one, it certainly won't be from AT&T.
Shelsy says: This is so not exciting.
And, to end on a low note, behold the extremely low-end Motorola Ciena. This device was scooped by Android and Me, and just might be the cheapest, most low-end Android device to date. It has specs that are even lower than the G1 in many regards, and will ship with Android 2.1, Eclair. The device doesn't even vibrate. It's rumored to be headed to Verizon.
Ryan says: This is so depressing. This will likely be free on contract, meaning lots and lots of people will buy it. Then it will perform so poorly that they'll end up hating it. As a first-impression of Android, this device couldn't be much worse.
Shelsy says: Lol, depressing...that's a good word for it. It doesn't even vibrate? The only good thing about this phone is that the people who are most likely to end up with it probably won't even realize that it runs Android (because, really, it doesn't do anything). So it shouldn't have too much of a negative impact on its reputation. Sheesh.
