Huge Gingerbread man arrives at Google!

A video was posted yesterday afternoon that all but proves the next version of Android will be arriving soon. Whenever a new version of Android appears, a giant sculpture of the named dessert is unveiled and placed on the lawn at the Googleplex. And now, a massive gingerbread man is standing proudly next to the frozen yogurt, eclair, donut, and cupcake sculptures.

The Android Developers YouTube channel posted this video yesterday showing the unveiling:

Nothing has been said (officially or otherwise) regarding the release of Gingerbread, and recent reports have suggested that it will be version 2.3 instead of 3.0 as previously suspected. But once the sculpture arrives, official announcements aren't far behind. [via AndroidCentral]

I love the Android statues at Google, sometimes affectionately called "avenue of sweets." It's a great way to have fun and generate excitement about a new release. But now the questions of release timing, which devices will receive the update, how soon the source code will be released, etc. are all about to get a lot more attention.

Woo hoo! I just think the sculptures are cool. Although I'm a little confused why the video starts out all Cloverfield-like. Anyway, I'm excited to see what Gingerbread is going to include.
