After a brief posting hiatus, we are back with this weekend's Android rumor recap. This is where we quickly go over the best Android related rumors and leaks of the past week, complete with our commentary. First up, we have a rumor from Engadget suggesting that LG is working on a 4 inch, dual core Android device for early next year. The device appears to be a keyboard-less slate device and is rumored to feature full 1080p HD recording.
Ryan says: That Tegra2 chip is crazy fast, so if this rumor turns out to be true, it's likely going to set the bar very high for what a "fast" phone really is. Though, knowing LG, it'll probably be headed straight to Verizon.
Shelsy says: It would be interesting to see if this phone really is that much faster than everything else. But otherwise, it doesn't sound that exciting. Having true HD recording is a cool feature, but I don't really know how important that is.
The previously rumored HTC Merge, which appears to be Verizon's version of the G2, was rumored to launch November 18. That clearly didn't happen, but the device did appear on Verizon's website this week, and was quickly pulled down. That would seem to indicate that it is, indeed coming eventually.
Ryan says: I love the G2, so this will likely be a very solid device. It appears to be running the new Sense, which is nice, though it also appears to be bundled with lots of Bing, which isn't so nice.
Shelsy says: I don't even know what to say about this anymore. The identical phone is sold on T-Mobile without all the crap on it. For me, it's a no-brainer, but I know there are a lot of people who don't want to switch. It makes me sad for them.
Engadget was also able to find information about as yet unknown HTC device which passed through the FCC this week. It appears to be headed for Sprint since it has their 4G chip inside. There's an outside chance that this isn't an Android device at all, but it's likely the long rumored HTC Knight. If true, it will be the 3rd 4G device from Sprint.
Ryan says: Pass. As awesome as HTC's devices are, Sprint's 4G network is very spotty and considerably more expensive than the others. I'm sure the device will rock, but it's definitely not for me.
Shelsy says: Well, having more 4G devices is always a good thing, and it definitely encourages expansion of faster and better networks, which I am a big fan of. So whether or not this phone or Sprint end up doing well, it's still a step in the right direction.
And finally, we have a rumor from the Wall Street Journal suggesting that the previously rumored PlayStation Phone will be announced by Sony at this year's Mobile World Congress in February. This device was first scooped by Engadget back in August, and rumors have been gaining traction since then. The device is rumored to be a sliding device that has game controls instead of a physical keyboard.
Ryan says: This thing looks seriously impressive, especially if you're into mobile gaming. The iPhone is already a massively popular mobile game platform, and it doesn't even have real game controls. If this PlayStation Phone is as powerful and capable as it seems, I have no trouble seeing it soar to the top of the mobile gaming charts.
Shelsy says: I have absolutely zero interest in this phone, personally, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it's going to be wildly popular. Just a hunch, though.
